Visit Historic Chicago, "The Greenest City in America"
Chicago architecture has both influenced and reflected the history of American architecture. The city offers a wide range of architectural styles designed by some of the world's most notable architects and firms including Burnham & Root, Holabird & Roche, William Le Baron Jenney, Charles Atwood, Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe. In the nineteenth century the "Chicago School" produced technically advanced buildings characterized by steel-frame construction with glass and terra cotta skins. Chicago is considered the birthplace of the modern skyscraper.

Today, Chicago is recognized as one of America's greenest cities. Since 1989 the city has constructed seven million square feet of green roofs, more than the rest of the nation, combined! In 2000 the city completed energy retrofits on more than fifteen million square feet of municipal buildings and introduced the Historic Chicago Bungalow initiative to help homeowners improve energy efficiency while preserving historic architectural character.

In 2005 Chicago became the world's first city to have four LEED Platinum buildings. In 2008 Chicago launched the Climate Action Plan, a strategy for lowering the city's greenhouse emissions by twenty-five percent. Other green initiatives from 1989-2010 include 165 miles of bikeways, 80 miles of greenway and parks; an alternative fueling station to power the city fleet; a Water Agenda to conserve freshwater and manage rain water; and one of the country's first environmental jobs training programs.

The Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference in Chicago will focus on the restoration and renovation of historic buildings with a particular emphasis on residential and commercial/institutional building energy retrofit. Learn how to update historic buildings to meet new energy savings requirements while preserving their architectural character and historic fabric. Chicago, one of the "greenest cities in America," with a proud architectural heritage and a culture of sustainable building practice, is a perfect venue for this education and networking event.
